The Greek Lizard

THE GREEK LIZARD

A camouflage pattern built for the Mediterranean

CASE FILE // GREECE

Among the many camouflage patterns produced during the Cold War, few are as dynamic as the Greek military's distinctive Lizard pattern.

Developed for use by the Hellenic Armed Forces, Greek Lizard camouflage belongs to the family of brushstroke patterns that became widespread across Europe during the postwar period. Its irregular, sweeping shapes were designed to break up the outline of the wearer rather than simply blend into a single background.

The result is a pattern that looks like a mix between Rhodesian brushstroke and Tiger Stripe.

Greek Lizard is particularly suited to the terrain for which it was developed. Rocky hillsides, scrub, dry vegetation and Mediterranean forests create an environment of hard contrasts, shadows and irregular vegetation. The pattern's combination of earth tones and disruptive shapes was intended to take advantage of exactly that environment.

A PATTERN WITH CHARACTER

Part of what makes Greek Lizard interesting to collectors is its distinctly European appearance.

Unlike the uniform, standardized appearance of later digital camouflage systems, older Lizard patterns were produced in an era when national militaries maintained their own approaches to camouflage. Small differences in production, coloration and garment construction can therefore be found across examples.

For surplus collectors, those differences are part of the appeal.

You're not simply looking at a camouflage pattern. You're looking at a piece of the Cold War's enormous military ecosystem, when uniforms, equipment and manufacturing methods varied considerably from one country to another.

WHY IT'S IN THE MANIFEST

Greek surplus doesn't appear in American collections with the same frequency as U.S. military equipment, making genuine examples particularly interesting when they turn up.

The Greek Lizard pieces entering the Southern Air Trade catalog were selected for exactly that reason.

They're practical surplus, but they're also representative of a military system and period that don't get nearly as much attention as their American counterparts.

We have Greek Lizard M65 Jackets in the manifest right now.
